Contemporary ecological sense of nature has much influence on EE, but this conception has two difficulties; one is to be based on a man-nature (man-environment) dualism, and the other is only to praise a romantic sense of symbiosis with ignoring natural fierceness. This paper has two parts: the history of Japanese EE, and Deweyan contribution to EE. The latter, as I would like to call this \"the third EE,\" rejects a dualistic ecology and optimistic ecocentrism.
